How to protect wood from rot and pests

Wood has a wide range of useful qualities, is affordable and easy to process, which provides it with application in many areas.

The main problem for wood is its susceptibility to weathering, rotting when used in a humid environment and the numerous fungi, molds and insects that attack it, deteriorate its quality and shorten its service life.

Impregnation as a way to deal with the problem

Wood is treated (impregnated) with special preparations and chemicals. They penetrate deep into its interior, kill settled pests and prevent the penetration of new ones. They provide good water and moisture resistance, repel mold and extend the life of the wood.

This is especially important for products with high loads. Impregnation of wooden sleepers, structures, beams, poles, stakes, etc. increases their reliability and service life many times over. It increases safety in their use, is economically advantageous and reduces the need for new logging in forests.

What’s used for impregnation

The most commonly used are creosote oil (coal creosote), anthracene oils (carbolinium), coal tar. In industrial conditions, impregnation of wooden sleepers and products is carried out using a special technology in modern autoclaves.

At home, you can achieve the same effect by pouring some of the listed products into a larger container and immersing the objects in it for several days. For furniture, floors and wood used in everyday life, a good coating with a suitable preparation is sufficient.
